Muscles are not built in your comfort zone. Muscles grow when you push through discomfort by adding weight or reps to a workout. Our emotional strength and recovery are also not built in a comfort zone. You may find it hard to face certain emotions or address certain fears. There may be feelings that overwhelm you. Avoidance and neglect will never increase your capacity. Facing those fears will.
Sometimes life brings hardships that were never intended. Oftentimes, you’re not consciously seeking to grow, but if you let him, God will take the challenges of life and increase your capacity to deal with the uncomfortable and to face the unavoidable. Every time you resist the urge to run or return to the old, you are better ready to embrace the new. Every day that you choose habits that strengthen your spirit and your mind, you are building recovery muscles.
When temptation comes to take the easy road, remember that it will not help you build recovery muscles. Lean on friends who care and the God who created you.
