Denise Heberlein

MA, LPC/A

Recently I completed a MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Liberty University. As a student at Liberty, I had been taught many different therapy styles. The ones that resonate with me are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness Therapy, Feminist Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. I am SYMBIS certified to counsel pre-marital couples. I am trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which aims to help people understand and accept difficult emotions/feelings.  I believe that our bodies are adversely affected by stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma.

As a former teacher my 20 plus years of experience teaching Kindergarten through 8th grade helped me to truly understand the struggles that students have with anxiety, stress, gender identity, and figuring out who they are in this world. Along with a BS in Elementary Education, I also have a MS in Elementary Education Administration. I was the Teen Mom Mentor Director for Young Life in our hometown for two years after teaching. Walking with these young moms through life was the greatest joy I could have ever received.

Back in our hometown church I was involved at a high level. I was a student leader for the elementary age through high school ministries. My husband and I co-facilitated a Blended Family support group, as well as helped with Divorce Care. I also co-facilitated and facilitated women’s bible study groups. While attending church I was able to mentor women through adverse situations in their lives.

With my diverse background experiences in life and work, I believe that working with adolescents, women, young adults and mature adults are where God would have me.

I believe the experiences I continue to receive, both life and educational, affords me in utilizing the different styles of therapeutic interventions along with the integration of my faith. Working from a collaborative stance and belief that fostering positive and effective change happens when the client enters a therapeutic relationship with the counselor. Our work together will be tailored to fit the lifestyle and goals of the client, making it individualized. We were not meant to live in isolation, we were meant to be in community together. We are at our best when we walk together through life, offering hope to those that may feel hopeless.
