Remember…

Whether you are a counselor, a pastor, a peer support, or simply a safe person who others tend to share their struggles with…there may be times you are overwhelmed by what you hear…by what others share.

How do you carry that load without it weighing you down? Here are a few things to remember.

  1. Remember that God walks out of that room with them, even when you can’t! And Jesus loves them more than you do

  2. Remember that the person or people you see are survivors; they have already been through far worse than what they might be feeling today.

  3. Remember your role: be present, come alongside, and help them see direction, dangers, and possibilities. You do not make their decisions and are not responsible for their choices.

  4. Remember to release what you cannot carry, walk, be mindful, breathe deeply, listen to music, journal, and pray! You are needed to care for others, and you can do so only if you take care of yourself!
